Another World (SNES)

I was introduced to Another World a few years ago when my friend produced a SNES cart and said-

‘You’re good at games, see if you can complete this’

Another World took me straight back to an era where a player had one life which was lost over and over again in a world where one shot, one bite, one fall meant death. Annoying, especially when you’re in an air shaft escaping an alien prison and you have to drop down holes to get to the next level. Some see you drop just a few feet, others have you plummet to your doom.

Other dangers come in the form of a cave-in, flood and numerous spiked pits. There is a constant threat from hordes of aliens as well. Many times you will be felled by a sneaky shot as you flee a room. Annoying yes, but you don’t give up.

Why? Because it’s rewarding. It’s a struggle sure, but you can get there. After investing the time and effort you really want to progress to see where the story goes. I am amazed at the depth gone into in order to create the strange world. Engaging moments of story embedded in the game create a cinematic experience unlike any other. This is immersive game play before the phrase even existed.

Graphically, Another World is still a sight to behold, with wonderful backgrounds and exciting cut scenes. With generic aliens, harem girls, wild beasts and amphitheatres of screaming sports fans this is a well stocked and animated place. Some moments are still a little sketchy with poor character animation in parts and some simplistic shading, but overall the aesthetic is unique and elegant.

I finally completed this a full year after being handed the cart, with help from numerous people in certain sections. This is a great game to play with friends as the shortness of the levels and the quickness of death, makes it one of only a few single player titles worth playing as a group.

Simply put, this is a gaming experience which is a welcome reminder of the innovative gaming scene of the early 90’s. Another World has a great plot, exciting game-play, and a fiendish difficulty rating. Combine this with a compelling and unique world, and you have a classic game which deserves the pedestal it has been placed on.
